Reid Youngberg was born in Malartic, a gold mining town in northern Quebec, 14th of August, 1943. Reid’s father was in the mining industry all his working life supporting his family. In 1948 after having taken employment at Steep Rock Iron Mines, he moved his family to Atikokan, Ontario where Reid grew up. He graduated from Atikokan High School and at the age of 18 went off to Thompson, Manitoba and started working as an underground miner with Inco (International Nickel Company).

Reid worked all across Canada in the mining industry for almost thirty years including Atikokan for two of those years. Reid worked underground at Steep Rock Iron Mines in the mid sixties. Although A Miner’s Story took place at that same mine, the story is based on facts and events occurring from the end of May to the end of November in 1957. The characters are fictitious but based on people that Reid knew and worked with.
